Laura Hokett, DVM

Dr. Laura Hokett was raised in Little Rock, went to undergraduate school here in Fayetteville, and veterinary school at LSU, where she graduated in 1987.  Despite attending a Tiger graduate school, she is a true Razorback fan at heart.

She lived in Las Vegas for 17 years, operating 2 large progressive animal hospitals before returning to Fayetteville in 2004.  Best Friends was her dream hospital and opened in 2005.

Dr. Laura has two grown children who have recently graduated from Colorado State University. Ross, her son, completed a degree in hydrogeology and her daughter, Emily, graduated with a degree in animal science, is working on her Master’s degree and then plans to apply to veterinary school. She currently lives with six dogs, a cat, and an African grey parrot, Ms. Pepper, who frequently accompanies her to work.  She spends her free time volunteering for various humane societies, studying advanced veterinary medicine, as well as spending time at the lake, and traveling as much as possible.


Rachel Hill, DVM

Dr. Rachel (Squires) Hill is a Fayetteville native and has been a lifelong Razorback supporter.  She attended the U of A where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science while helping open Best Friends where she worked for three years prior to veterinary school.  She has assisted veterinarians in Scotland and South Africa and worked on a variety of species including: horses, pigs, rhinoceros, lions, water buffalo, and wildebeests.  She received her D.V.M. degree from the University of Missouri in Columbia and loves being able to practice veterinary medicine in her hometown.

Dr. Hill and her husband Alan have a daughter, two dogs (Miley, a Shepherd mix and Jackson, a Standard Poodle) and two cats.  She enjoys cooking, gardening, reading, and hiking.  She also likes traveling and spending time with friends and family.



Anita Kiehl, DVM, MS, Diplomate ACVP

Dr. Kiehl graduated from the University of Florida School of Veterinary Medicine in 1980 and entered a mixed private practice prior to enrolling in the Clinical Pathology Residency Program at Colorado State University and obtaining a Masters Degree in Pathology.  She was board certified in Clinical Pathology in 1988.

She has worked as a pathologist for Colorado Vet Lab , Doctors and Physicians’ Lab, SmithKline Beecham Clinical Labs and Antech Labs prior to co-founding Florida Vet Path, Inc. (1998) and FVP Consultants, Inc.  (2003) with Dr. Maron Calderwood Mays. She serves as a consulting pathologist for several commercial laboratories.  She is licensed and accredited  in Florida and Arkansas, practicing in Arkansas, as well as providing pathology services  in both Florida and Arkansas.  She currently resides in Floral City, Florida and Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Mandi Shearhart, DVM

Dr. Mandi Shearhart is our newest veterinarian.  She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science from the University of Arkansas and then went on to veterinary school at the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine.  She worked for Best Friends for four years before going to veterinary school and couldn’t be happier to be back.  Prior to her work at Best Friends, she spent three years working at the Humane Society of Southwest Missouri and has continued to stay involved with various animal shelters and rescue organizations.

Dr. Shearhart and her husband Tony have a son, Xander, and currently live with five dogs, five cats, a rabbit, and a snake.  In between taking care of all the animals and attending her son’s many sports events, she enjoys doing puzzles and playing board games with the family as well as spending time in the beautiful outdoors.  She also has a large extended family in NWA that she loves getting together with whenever possible. Fun Fact: Cousin to Jessie, Dasiah and Theadra.
